Blueprints for Recovery – a young-men-only alcohol rehabilitation center in Prescott, Arizona – continues its observation of Alcohol Awareness Month, as organized by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD). The annual campaign brings attention to alcohol addiction, its many forms, and its various consequences. Our blog covered a few important topics already, and we know use this entry to challenge the myth of the “High Functioning Alcoholic”.
Destructive Alcoholism Takes On Many Faces
Alcoholics who have hit “rock bottom” are often people who can no longer function at all in society, with their family, or at work. However, this is not the only way to fall into desperation due to alcohol addiction. The truth is many people who are harming their minds and bodies – as well as destroying close relationships – due to alcohol addiction can still maintain functionality in many ways. Society has opted to call such people high functioning alcoholics, but this is a bit of a misnomer rooted in myths and denial.
The myth is it is still possible to be happy and healthy while addicted to alcohol, as long as it does not cost you employment opportunities. The truth is alcohol addiction is limiting and painful in every case. If you are doing well in your job but drink heavily, then you could probably be doing even better at work without the addiction.
Denying Alcohol Addiction is Dangerous
Calling yourself a high functioning alcoholic is dangerous, as it encourages this idea that your alcohol abuse is not actually a problem. Indeed, it allows you to trick yourself into thinking you do not need any help. You must be smarter, braver, and stronger than your alcohol addiction and admit you could be “functioning” even better without binge drinking.
People who are in denial about the harm of being a “high functioning” alcoholic often:
- Joke frequently about alcohol addiction
- Keep employment but not earn raises or promotions
- Get arrested for driving under the influence (DUI)
- Binge drink to “relax”
- Forget conversations and activities that occurred while drinking
